Men’s Mental Health by the Numbers (U.S.)

Men’s mental health is a significant public health concern in the United States, with statistics showing both high levels of silent suffering and severe outcomes:

  • According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), men die by suicide nearly four times more often than women — a disparity that highlights both the severity of men’s mental health struggles and barriers to support and treatment.
  • In 2023, the age-adjusted suicide rate among males was approximately 22.8 deaths per 100,000 people, compared with 5.9 per 100,000 for females — demonstrating how men disproportionately account for suicide deaths in the U.S. population.
  • Men often experience depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions at similar or higher rates than women but are less likely to be diagnosed or to seek professional support, contributing to under-recognized suffering and higher mortality.

These numbers represent real lives — fathers, sons, brothers, and friends — navigating emotional pain often in silence or isolation. The Vow explores this reality, where unspoken grief, societal expectations of masculinity, and internalized stigma intersect with mental health challenges that are too often left unseen.
